Hastelloy

Hastelloy is a term used to describe nickel metal that has been alloyed to increase corrosion resistance. This is accomplished primarily through the addition of molybdenum and chromium. There are many grades of Hastelloy, with each grade having a different chemical makeup to be optimized for a specific set of properties.

Hastelloy performs better in severely corrosive environments than other specialty metal products such as Incoloy due to its high molybdenum and chromium content. The addition of molybdenum improves overall workability. Hastelloy alloys are also ductile, allowing for easy fabrication and shaping.

What is Hastelloy Alloy used for?

Hastelloy alloy is utilized in the production of high-temperature gas path components such as turbine combustors, flame holders, liners, pressure vessels of some nuclear reactors, chemical reactors, and chemical industry pipes and valves.

Hastelloy Alloy vs. Stainless Steel

Hastelloy, a nickel-iron alloy, is a more exotic and costly building material than stainless steel, an iron-iron alloy. When dealing with a severely corrosive substance when stainless steel is deemed unsuitable for the process, hastelloy is typically the most suited choice.
